How to calculate sales tax
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal: a $100 item at 8.25% is $100 × 0.0825 = $8.25 tax, for a total of $108.25. To go backward from a receipt total, divide by (1 + rate): $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100. The Total with tax mode above does this reverse calculation, which is handy for expense reports and bookkeeping when you only have the final amount.
State vs. local sales tax
Forty-five states plus DC charge a statewide sales tax, and in 38 of them cities and counties add their own. That's why the rate on your receipt is often higher than the state figure: Texas is 6.25% at the state level but 8.25% in Houston, Dallas, and Austin. The table above lists each state's base rate and the population-weighted average local rate. For a receipt-accurate answer, look up your city's combined rate and enter it under Enter a rate.
Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon (Alaska allows local sales taxes). The highest combined averages are in Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Washington, and Alabama, all above 9%.
What is usually exempt
- Groceries: exempt or taxed at a reduced rate in most states; fully taxed in a few (e.g. Mississippi, South Dakota).
- Prescription drugs: exempt in every state with a sales tax; over-the-counter drugs vary.
- Clothing: exempt in Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, and below a price threshold in Massachusetts and New York.
- Services: most states tax goods but not most services, though this is changing.
- Online purchases: since the 2018 *Wayfair* decision, large online sellers collect sales tax based on the delivery address.
Sales tax for small businesses
If you sell taxable goods, you collect sales tax at the rate for the buyer's location and remit it to the state, usually monthly or quarterly. Prices shown to customers are typically pre-tax in the US (unlike VAT countries). When you quote a tax-inclusive price, use the reverse mode to figure out how much of it is tax you owe versus revenue you keep.
