How much to tip in the US
- Sit-down restaurants: 18%–20% is standard; 15% for so-so service, 22%–25% for excellent service or large groups.
- Bars: $1–$2 per drink, or 15%–20% of the tab.
- Food delivery: 15%–20%, minimum $3–$5; more in bad weather.
- Takeout / counter service: optional, 0%–10%. Tipping screens at coffee shops are a suggestion, not an obligation.
- Rideshare / taxi: 15%–20%.
- Hair, nails, spa: 15%–20%.
- Hotel housekeeping: $2–$5 per night, left daily.
- Movers: $20–$50 per mover for a full day.
Many restaurants add an automatic 18%–20% gratuity for parties of six or more. Check the bill so you don't double tip.
Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides say the pre-tax subtotal is the correct base, and that's what this calculator does by default when you enter the tax rate. In practice most people tip on the total, and the difference is small: on a $68.50 bill with 8% tax, 20% pre-tax is $12.69 versus $13.70 on the total. If the service was good, nobody minds the extra dollar.
Splitting the bill fairly
An even split is easiest and what the calculator shows. If one person ordered far more, a fairer approach is to each pay for your own items and then split the tax and tip proportionally: your share of the tip = total tip × (your items ÷ subtotal). For a quick fair split in your head, add 20% tip and roughly 8% tax by multiplying each person's food by 1.28.
Mental math for tipping
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it for 20% or add half of it for 15%. On $68.50: 10% is $6.85, so 20% is $13.70 and 15% is about $10.28. Rounding the total up to the nearest dollar (an option above) makes signing the receipt faster and keeps your bank statement tidy.
Frequently asked questions
Is 15% still an acceptable tip?+
It's the low end of acceptable at a sit-down restaurant in the US; 18%–20% has become the norm. For counter service or takeout, any tip is a courtesy.
Should I tip on the tax?+
Strictly speaking, no, tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Enter the tax rate above and the calculator will use the pre-tax amount. Most people tip on the total anyway, which is slightly more generous.
How do I split a bill with tip between friends?+
Enter the bill, choose a tip, and set the number of people. The calculator shows the total and each person's share including tip.
Does the calculator save my preferred tip?+
Yes. Your last settings are remembered in your browser, so next time the page opens with your usual percentage selected.
